As the owner of Decky Dillon’s bar in Matagorda in Lanzarote, Declan Dillon is normally used to having a packed terrace for sundown on Fridays.

“One evening I came down and there was no-one there,” he says. “Inside the bar was chock-a-block because I have a big air conditioning unit inside. People were shouting at me to keep it on.”
