Warren County’s Gamma Chi Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was recognized with several awards at the NC DKG Convention. The five delegates representing Gamma Chi were: from left to right, Nancy Tunstall, Sheila Robertson, Debra Clayton, Diane Colin and Sara Council.

At the 91st annual North Carolina Delta Kappa Gamma (NC DKG) Convention, Gamma Chi Chapter was represented by President Sheila Robertson, Treasurer Debra Clayton, Music/Fine Arts Chair Diane Colin, Nominations Chair Sara Council, and Communications & Marketing Chair Nancy Tunstall. The convention was held April 25-27 in Charlotte, North Carolina. NC DKG is a part of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (DKG), a professional honor society that promotes personal and professional growth of women educators and excellence in education.

The theme of the convention was “Recruit! Retain! Recognize! NC DKG Forever at its Strongest.” Attended by 205 delegates from across North Carolina, the convention included business sessions, workshops, entertainment, and keynote speakers.

At the reception on Friday night, attendees were entertained by the Split Second Sound Entertainment Group—Chanel Smylee, DJ. Attendees enjoyed a buffet, games and dancing. First and second timers to the convention were introduced.

Saturday morning began with the NC DKG business meeting. Reports were heard and amendments to the Bylaws and Standing Rules were approved. Following the business meeting, the NC DKG Educational Foundation met. Highlights included a report on the grants awarded by the foundation.

Saturday afternoon breakout sessions offered workshops following the strands of society business, professional growth, and personal growth. Interesting workshops were attended by Gamma Chi members.

On Saturday evening the Chapter Presidents Banquet began with a tribute to chapter presidents including Gamma Chi’s President Robertson. The keynote speaker was Heather Smith, the 2024 Burroughs Wellcome NC Teacher of the Year. The banquet concluded with the installation of the NC DKG officers for 2025-2027.

The Ceremony of Remembrance was held Sunday morning to celebrate the lives of the sisters statewide who had passed away during the previous year. Gamma Chi member Shirley White was one of those remembered.

The convention concluded with a Birthday Brunch for NC DKG celebrating its 91st birthday and remembering the twelve NC DKG founders. Also, awards were presented. In recognition of exemplary leadership in promoting chapter participation in the activities of the Society, Gamma Chi Chapter received the Order of the Rose Award—the highest level of chapter achievement. In addition, Gamma Chi received the NC DKG Newsletter Excellence Award for accomplishments in producing a quality newsletter. Member Diane Colin was honored for reaching her 10th milestone as a DKG member.

Established in 1929, DKG is global with approximately 50,000 members in 17 different countries. Members include professional women educators in both the private and public sectors. Selection is based on professional qualifications, leadership potential and personal qualities. The North Carolina organization has 83 chapters with approximately 3,000 members.
