- And the clothes rip off! Ah! And she's in her underwear! Gag, so good! Hi, I'm Doechii, and, today, I'm doing The Breakdown with Cosmo. I do like watching my own work back. I like to look at it and sometimes over-critique, (chuckles) but also just relive in the moment. ♪ Do you wanna build ♪ ♪ Do you wanna build ♪ ♪ A snowman ♪ ♪ A snowman ♪ (Doechii blows raspberry) (Doechii laughing) This is the "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" video that I posted on my YouTube. Me and my friends, we were young, in high school, just getting started, and we had a little group going, and we were singing for, like, a project. We had to hurry up and get to class, and we only had one take to do this, like, song. One of my friends kept messing up, and I don't wanna call her out, she know who she is. That note was off, girl. It was off. (Doechii chuckles) ♪ Tryna silence me ♪ ♪ Tryna silence me ♪ ♪ Yeah, my anxiety ♪ ♪ Can't shake it off of me ♪ ♪ Can't shake it off of me ♪ So good. This video, "ANXIETY," I did a Gotye cover. I was starting to make a song a day, just getting used to sharing my music on the internet, and it ended up being really successful and kind of traveling and building somewhat of a fan base. If you look at that video, I'm wearing, like, my little sister's shirt underneath my mom's nightgown. And I threw that outfit together to just try to make a moment out of something, and it's been creative. I do remember the first song that I ever wrote. It was called "Cookie Cream Pie," and I did it for my sixth grade talent show. It was horrible. I'll say the lyrics, "Your love is like a cookie cream pie, in my heart, I could eat it up. Treat me so fly, keep me clean like an apple pie." What does that even mean?! (producer chuckles) (Doechii chuckles) I just wanted to rhyme. (laughs) So I got fired today. Aw. I was working retail at the time, and it was really tough, and I got fired, because I couldn't keep up. After I posted that video, I really did everything that I said I would. I remember going into different labels and I was like, "Hey, so, I have an internship here, and I'm supposed to be in Studio B." And they were like, "Who are you?" Like, just completely lying. And I tried, I tried my best, I went to shows, I connected with people, and it brought me right here on this couch. ♪ Barbara was my idol ♪ ♪ Had to wear my attitude ♪ ♪ To every dance recital ♪ (Doechii chuckles) Okay, so this video is the "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" video. That was kind of the first music video that I really poured a lot into. My inspiration behind the concept for the music video was nostalgia, but my nostalgia, all the things that I loved coming up, like MySpace and UVU, some of you kids have no idea what I'm even talking about right now, but just the things that I really loved on the internet, and coming up during that time. - [Producer] Who would be your number one in your Top 8 right now? - Whoa. My number one, I think now, it would probably be Rihanna. ♪ I'm goin' crazy, yeah ♪ ♪ Niggas can't date me, yeah ♪ Iconic. ♪ Got 'em going crazy, yeah ♪ (Doechii laughs) The "Crazy" music video, oh my goodness, oh my goodness. For that music video, I collaborated with C. Prinz, she's a really talented director, she's incredible. And we wanted to come in and make a statement of, "Here I am, in my rawest, purest form. It was kind of like a "I am everything" type of energy, I wanted to show maximum power, and I think the video did just that. I remember when I dropped that, for the video release, like, party, I arrived in like this clear truck, and I had like a bunch of dancers with me and we were all naked. It was crazy. ♪ What it is, ho ♪ ♪ What it is ♪ ♪ What's up ♪ ♪ What's up ♪ ♪ Every good girl ♪ (Doechii sighs) I thought we buried "What It Is" a long time ago. "What It Is" was a turning point in my career, because it was my first fully singing song, which was also out of my comfort zone, and kind of a new sound for me. Me experimenting with pop and samples, like the "No Scrubs" sample is in there by TLC, and also Trillville sample is in there as well, which is the "What it is, what's up," which is really cool. Not my style. I mean, I'm grateful for the hit, but, God, we played that song so much, it's like ingrained in my brain in the worst way. ♪ Miss, she, her, black vagina ♪ ♪ Designer, say Gucci, Prada print ♪ The inspiration for the "Alter Ego" music video was, instead of just constantly talking about how I'm the Swamp Princess, I was like, "Let me actually take them to the swamp. I haven't actually showed them what the swamp is, or where the swamp is." And so, we wanted that visual. And also I wanted to take JT out of Miami and put her into the swamp as well. And the way that she opened up and delivered and pushed through, I'm talking mud, wind, water, mosquitoes, and crocodiles, it was insane, it was really, really cool. ♪ This is the perfect opportunity ♪ ♪ For us to just take a second and kind of ♪ - So cool, so cool. One of the most fun shoots that I've ever shot. I literally have to sit up in my seat, because it was so fun to shoot. When we used the dummy to throw him out of the door, it's a really quick click, I think it's like two seconds, and I'm like, "Ah!" And we threw him out the door. It was so funny, I loved it. I have always been really, really passionate about theater as a whole, like music, dancing, acting, and just being a creative in one sitting, and visuals allow me to do that, music videos allow me to itch all of those, you know, things that I wanna do. So, yes, I've always been passionate about it, and it means a lot to me. It allows me to immerse people into the world, bring it more than a sonical experience, but really give people an immersive world to engage in, and that's so much cooler than just listening to one song with headphones in. ♪ Hello, bitch ♪ ♪ Hoo-ha ♪ ♪ Hoo-ha ♪ ♪ Step up in this bitch, I'm the ♪ (Doechii chuckles) Wow. The NPR Tiny Desk performance. I was very nervous about that one. It's such an intimate space to perform in, because there's literally like maybe 30 people in front of you, which is so much harder to perform in front of than 30,000 people, you have no idea. A really important performance for me, but getting out of my comfort zone, I had this cool concept of "Why don't we give people a sonical experience of the jazz interpretation, the blues interpretation, the gospel interpretation of this album, and see where that takes us." And that's what we did. And, I mean, to see a lot of celebrities show their respect for my performance and admire it was really, really cool, because these are peers that I admire myself, and their work is so cool. So if they think I'm cool, doing something right, I don't know. ♪ Whoopsie, made a oopsie ♪ ♪ $100,000 oops made me loopy ♪ (Doechii laughs) The Genius open mic performance with Issa Rae. One of my team members, Danielle, she had a really cool idea to get Issa Rae a part of it, because, you know, Issa Rae in her "Insecure" show, she would rap to herself in the mirror. And she was talking about how my song reminded her of that with Issa. And she was like, "Well, what if we get Issa to be a part of it? And I was like, "Fantastic idea. Gimme four of 'em right now." And we got Issa Rae. She's so good. She got it in two takes, we only did one extra take because we wanted to, but she, brilliant. Two women have won, Lauryn Hill, three women have won. (audience cheering) The moment when I heard my name called, I wasn't thinking about the award all night, because I was stressed out about my performance, and then it hit me like, "Oh, God, this is your category, what if you don't win? They got this camera on you, they gonna see it. What face are you gonna make? Like, what, are you gonna cry, girl? What's gonna happen?" And then Cardi B called my name, and I had to just... I let it all out. The first person I hugged was my mother, 'cause I owe her everything. The feeling of being the third woman to win in this category, I feel two things, it's nuanced, I feel I honored to be carrying this and be the third woman to carry that, and open more doors for more women and female rappers after me, but I also think to myself, "Man, only three women have won this." But it's an honor. ♪ I'm the hardest rapper ♪ Grammys, put your hands up! Go, go! And the clothes rip off! Ah! And she's in her underwear! Gag, so good. Oh my gosh, this was intense. I have never pushed myself that hard before in my life. I really wanted to exercise my theater kid in me, and, also, I was like, "What if we merge rap and musical theater and make something cool out of it, but like in this Thom Browne edgy suit way that's like masculine and cool, I don't know. And we tried it, and, boy, did it come out so good. Shout out to Robbie, my choreographer, and shout out to C. Prinz again, my creative director. Brilliant.
